The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia has published the National Programme for Public Railway Infrastructure for the period 2025–2029, which sets out an ambitious plan for investment in railway infrastructure.
According to the programme, the focus will be on the modernisation of the railway line along Corridor X, which will be developed in the long term as a double-track line with projected speeds of 160 to 200 km/h, where such investment is justified.
Improvements are planned for main, regional and local railway lines, with the application of modern technical standards, including higher permitted speeds, greater axle loads and longer train formations. Particular emphasis is placed on improving safety at level crossings through grade separation, the installation of automatic half-barriers, and the rationalisation of the number of crossings.
Priority is given to resolving level crossings on main railway lines, for which the estimated required investment is around €430 million.
The total investment required to implement the National Programme is estimated at €14 billion.
