Innotrans 2026 saw one world premiere of a cutting-edge innovation from SEE region, as ALTPRO company from Zagreb, Croatia presented its hydrogen-based power generation system for electric locomotives, HERMES.
HERMES is a containerized hydrogen power generation system designed to supply traction power to existing electric locomotives. It integrates hydrogen storage, fuel cell energy conversion and onboard energy management into a single modular platform installed on a standard railway wagon. HERMES enables electrified locomotives to operate on non-electrified railway lines without modification of the locomotive traction system.
In addition to normal refueling process, HERMES has an option of quick replacement of hydrogen tanks, enabling a rapid reload and drastically reducing delays in exploitation.
Apart from uses in railway transport, HERMES also acts as a mobile power generator, bringing mobile clean energy source for remote locations, or providing rapid deployment of temporary microgrids.
